Gonzalo Higuain scored an impressive hat-trick in Barcelona as Real Madrid claimed an emphatic 4-0 victory over Espanyol in Sunday night’s late kick-off.
Earlier on, Espanyol’s cross-town rivals Barca had cruised to the top of the La Liga table as Adriano’s lone strike guided the reigning champions to a 1-0 win at Sporting Gijon.
The Catalans were counting on their neighbors to deny Jose Mourinho’s Real side but Higuian’s early first-half strike quickly set the visitors in motion.
A flurry of second half goals followed, with former Espanyol winger Jose Maria Callejon also appearing on the score sheet for Los Blancos.
The win continued a dominant streak for the Spanish Cup holders, who also put away Dutch giants Ajax 3-0 in the midweek’s Champions League match at Santiago Bernabeu.
However, there is no doubt that winning at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat counted for more than just the three points given that Real were in Catalunya and there could hardly be a better opportunity to send a message to the Barca faithful in the nearby surroundings.
As it turned out, the message was loud and clear, sending the Madrid giants within a point of Pep Guardiola’s men at the summit and restoring normal order after unexpected early spells at the top from Valencia and Real Betis.
