Striker begins quest for sixth straight league title  | read this item

Like him or hate him, you better respect Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede has celebrated domestic silverware every single year since 2006 and tonight’s Serie A opener will begin his quest for a sixth straight league title.

Ibrahimovic, who lifted the Scudetto with AC Milan last year following three years of glory with city rivals Inter as well as a La Liga title won with reigning European champions Barcelona, is confident that Milan remains the team to beat in Italy.

With an extremely competitive Lazio side visiting San Siro, many have tipped the fixture to be a toughly contested battle but regardless of how well the visitors perform, Ibra insists that there will be no stopping the Rossoneri.

“We cannot wait to start the season. I believe we are still favourites to win the Scudetto,” the 29-year old asserted.

Praising the club’s new signings such as Phillipe Mexes and Alberto Aquilani, he added: “With respect to last season, we have strengthened our team and we are much stronger than last year.”

Although his winning streak on a team level continued last season, Ibrahimovic struggled for goals on an individual level as his tally of 14 fell two short of even the 16 he scored during a disappointing campaign in Barcelona.

Teammate Gennaro Gattuso even urged the striker to increase his scoring rate but given that Ibra recently settled differences with a far more staunch critic in Barca coach Pep Guardiola, it appears that he remains composed ahead of his first season as a permanent Milan player.

“Think of today. Guardiola is doing well at Barcelona, and me too. We must move forward and not look back,” Ibrahimovic stated, referring to Barca’s continued success as well as a satisfactory last season for himself on loan at Milan.

While Ibrahimovic might feel that Milan is the very best in Italy, he would be hard-pressed to say the same about the club’s Champions League group stage, where they will square off against Barca, among others.

Post-match update: Lazio held AC Milan to a 2-2 draw at San Siro. New signings Miroslav Klose and Djibril Cisse opened the scoring for the visitors but Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Antonio Cassano struck to ensure at least one point for the reigning champions in a well-fought match.
