Manchester City’s newest member Samir Nasri has revealed that former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira played an instrumental role in convincing him that signing for the Eastlands outfit was the right decision for his future.

Nasri, who departed Arsenal in a protracted £25 million move yesterday, brushed aside suggestions that the transfer was motivated purely by financial reasons and believes that the Citizens will be the team to beat in the coming years.

“I’m here to play football and to enjoy it and win titles. I spoke to Patrick Vieira about the move as it was important to get advice from players who played for the club know the club very well,” the Frenchman said in an interview at Manchester City’s official website.

He added: “Vieira said (that) City is the place to be. It is the club of the future, they want to win everything. They have a big, big, big project.”

Vieira captained Arsenal’s unbeaten Premier League winning team of 2003-04 but subsequently went on to represent Juventus, Inter Milan, and Manchester City before recently becoming an influential figure as the latter’s football development executive.

However, even his presence was not enough to prevent the infamous delay in the transfer, which led to Nasri missing the pre-season at Etihad Stadium.

“I was a little bit frustrated, I said to the manager I wanted to leave. I wanted to do the pre-season with Manchester (City) so I could know a little bit more about my teammates. It was frustrating but it is a new start and I am looking forward to doing it,” the 24-year old concluded.

Nasri’s first outing as a City player could come as early as this Sunday, when he will return to North London with his new teammates to take on Tottenham in the Spurs’ home opener at White Hart Lane.
