Liverpool have announced on the club’s official website that Newcastle United left-back Jose Enrique is traveling to Merseyside for a medical as the two clubs have reached an agreement over the player’s transfer fee.

Enrique, who joined the Magpies from La Liga outfit Villarreal in 2007, has been on the Reds’ radar for quite a while now along with Germany international Marcell Jansen and FC Porto’s Alvaro Pereira.

However, Thursday’s announcement only served as confirmation of the widespread belief that the Spaniard has been the first choice for manager Kenny Dalglish all along.

“Liverpool FC confirmed today that they had agreed a fee with Newcastle United for the transfer of Jose Enrique,” read a statement that was released on Liverpoolfc.tv.

The Magpies followed suit and also confirmed the impending deal on their official website.

“Newcastle United can confirm that a fee has been agreed with Liverpool for the transfer of Jose Enrique. The player will travel to Liverpool today to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical.”

Although former Manchester United skipper Gary Neville wrote off Liverpool’s chances of competing for the Premier League title this season, the Reds’ summer transfer activities seem to suggest otherwise.

Once Enrique is officially unveiled as the club’s latest signing, he will join the likes of Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing, and Doni on the list of new arrivals at Anfield.

In order to finish last season on a strong note, Dalglish also spent aggressively in the January transfer window, which resulted in the signings of prolific Uruguayan Luiz Suarez and Enrique’s former Newcastle teammate Andy Carroll.

There is little point in quoting Neville when LFC is concerned. He has ably demonstrated his self-confessed hatred of Liverpool and all things connected thereof!
This guy is now an “independent” studioman for SKY but then we all know about anything connected to the M family!

  11. MB says:

Of course he is a massive signing coz he will be filling up a massive hole in our defense. Do you have ideas on another LB good enough and still wanting to leave his champions league team to play for Liverpool. Enrique is young, an international player!! We are not City who can afford the big names at 200k a week so be realistic.
