Spurs sign American keeper

40 year old American makes final move.

By | 3rd June 2011

In their quest to make a return to the Champions League, Tottenham Hotspur have signed American goalkeeper Brad Friedel. The 40 year old was available on a free transfer from Aston Villa, and his arrival at White Hart Lane has seemingly paved the way for Brazilian Gomes to leave the club.

“Brad is a top goalkeeper of real quality who has great experience,” Spurs boss Harry Redknapp told the club’s official website. “It is good to have three such experienced top goalkeepers at the club in Gomes, Carlo [Cudicini] and now Brad and it means we have competition for places particularly with the number of games we will hopefully face next year both domestically and in Europe as well.”

Gomes could leave

Gomes, meanwhile, has been linked with a move back to Dutch club PSV, which would place Friedel right into the starting eleven for the 2011/12 season.

”He (Gomes) has let me know he is interested in a return to PSV,” PSV’s sporting director, Marcel Brands, told Voetbal International. ”I have let him know I will look at what we can do for each other. His contract only has one year left to run. There is not much more to say at the moment.”
