Barcelona striker David Villa has supported the decisions made by Chelsea and Liverpool to splash record amounts of cash in the January transfer window.
While the Blues paid the Reds £50 million to secure the services of Fernando Torres towards the end of the transfer period, the Merseysiders took a huge chunk of those funds (£35 million, to be precise), to bring Andy Carroll to Anfield from Newcastle.
Doubts have already emerged over the worth of both players as Carroll battles a serious injury and Torres has an extensive history of fitness concerns ever since moving to Liverpool in 2007.
Furthermore, the uninspiring debut of Torres at Stamford Bridge against his former club on Sunday seems to strengthen the belief that he could find it difficult integrating into a system that already possesses the likes of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka.
Villa, however, is no stranger to high-profile transfers having sealed one of his own from Valencia last summer. Therefore, based on his experience, he believes Spain teammate Torres and Liverpool’s new-look attack of Carroll and Luis Suarez will eventually deliver.
“I am totally convinced that his move to Chelsea will go well and he will succeed in London. It’s been very difficult for him, but I’m pleased because I know he wanted to go there. He is very happy and I wish him well,” Villa said of the man who supported him in the attack of the Spain side that lifted the World Cup in South Africa a few months ago.
He added: “Each year there are big transfers of this type. It’s normal. All teams need to strengthen when they want to win things. Liverpool needed to reinforce after the sale of Fernando.
“They (Carroll and fellow new recruit Luis Suarez) are two great players who are worth every penny. I’m sure they’ll be a hit with the fans.”
