Midfielder calls Dowd a ‘joke’ on Twitter

By | 5th February 2011

Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere could face punishment from the FA after he mocked referee Phil Dowd on Twitter.

The use of the social networking website by Premier League players most recently came under fire when former Liverpool forward Ryan Babel used it to complain about the officiating in an FA Cup match against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Babel later apologized and the incident quickly faded away into the memory, particularly at the Emirates Stadium, where manager Arsene Wenger went as far as encouraging the use of the website for the benefit of the club.

Perhaps Wilshere thought it was beneficial to the Gunners – or at least for their hurting self-esteem – to take his frustration out on the man who awarded two soft penalties to Newcastle as they came from four goals down to draw 4-4 against the visiting Arsenal at St. James’ Park.

“Inconsistent refereeing needs to stop. It’s killing the game,” the 19-year old England international stated on his official Twitter page.

It was very obvious that Wilshere was taking an exception to Dowd’s officiating early in the second half when he did not punish Newcastle the way he punished Arsenal by sending off Gunners midfielder Abou Diaby for minor shoving in response to a strong tackle from Joey Barton.

When Kevin Nolan rigidly pushed Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny right after scoring the hosts’ first goal, however, Dowd took no action.

“If Diaby goes, what’s the difference between that and Nolan on our keeper!?? Joke,” Wilshere added.

Nevertheless, surrendering a four-goal lead will mean that Wenger will have plenty to say about his team’s fragile defending ahead of a daunting Champions League match coming up against favorites FC Barcelona.

The only silverlining of the day for Wilshere and his teammates came when Premier League leaders Manchester United lost 2-1 to the Wolves, who happen to be the lowest-ranked team in the English top flight.

Good man Jack, but you’re about to find out that free speech is expensive these days.!

Spot on Wilshere couldn’t agree more! Refs such as Dowd (who was also the official in charge of a late Spurs comeback against Arsenal at the Emirates, and The Wenger’s ”Bottle” incident at Old Trafford a while back) and Howard webb who keep “Fixing matches” for Man united etc just because it has their beloved Countrymen i.e. Rooney, Rio, Scholes, etc. Shame on you Dowd and Howard Webb! Shame on you, which is exactly why England will never win anything for years to come, (Unlike for Spain as you will never see Barcelona being unfairly given 6 minutes extra time just because they are chasing a game!) Their technical skills, movement of the ball and cohesion doesn’t require any HELPING HANDS!
