It is being reported by ESPNsoccernet that Tottenham have had a third bid rejected for West Ham United’s Scott Parker. In contrast to the first two bids, the most recent one included a major player – want-away Spurs striker Robbie Keane.
Manager Harry Redknapp reportedly offered the Hammers £8 million plus Keane, who is already close to completing a long-drawn move to Upton Park before Monday’s winter transfer deadline.
Since Parker is clearly one of the keys to surviving relegation for Avram Grant’s struggling outfit, it was only expected that once again, the East Londoners would reject any offers for the midfielder.
Nevertheless, West Ham chairman David Gold is pleased that turning Redknapp down won’t affect bringing Keane to the club as long as both parties resolve their differences in regards to the length of the deal.
“Robbie Keane is a player we greatly admire. He is clearly available and quality players rarely are. We see him as a potential acquisition. We are looking at all players that are available from top-quality clubs,” said Gold, who completed the signing of striker Demba Ba from German Bundesliga’s Hoffenheim earlier this month.
At the moment, the relegation-threatened Hammers are only willing to seal a £1 million loan for Keane before making it permanent only if they are confirmed to stay in the top flight at the end of the season.
The Spurs, on the other hand, have been trying hard to off-load the Ireland international on a permanent basis.
According to Gold, however, it is only a matter of time before his club’s hardwork in signing Keane pays off.
He elaborated: “David Sullivan (West Ham’s co-chairman) was up until the early hours of the morning still pursuing targets that we have. It will probably go right to the wire.
“We like to think we don’t leave a stone unturned. Our people will go the extra mile to do whatever it takes to try to bring in players that otherwise you wouldn’t get if you didn’t pursue.”
Like West Ham, the Spurs are also reportedly looking to complete a last-minute deal for a forward despite Redknapp’s dismissal of the notion yesterday.
