Earlier this week Birmingham City pulled off a major victory to book a trip to the Carling Cup final at Wembley, and now it appears the Blues are set to revamp their front line. The Independent is reporting that Alex McLeish is set to clinch a deal for Nigerian international Obafemi Martins, who has had a less than stellar time at Rubin Kazan.
There are few questions about Martins’ skill, as the powerful Nigerian has a wealth of European football experience with the likes of Inter Milan, Newcastle United, and Wolfsburg. If he can establish himself as a regular at St. Andrews and re-adapt quickly to life in the Premier League, he could fire Birmingham up the table.
According to reports, McLeish is looking to land his man on a loan spell for the remainder of the season. The price being quotes is in the region of £350,000, representing good value for a striker who scored 28 goals in 88 appearances for Newcastle United.
Whatever ends up happening, there’s no doubt that the Blues could use some immediate help up front. Cameron Jerome, the club’s most notable striker, trails midfielder Craig Gardner in the scoring charts, and Matt Derbyshire has failed to impress so far this season.
