Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan could be on the move to Tottenham after Spurs boss Harry Redknapp contacted the Spanish club over a potential £9 million bid for the Uruguayan striker.

Goal.com is reporting that Redknapp is contemplating making this move to bolster his strike force before the transfer window closes next week. It is believed that the Spanish club will let him leave due to recent financial troubles.

After watching Forlan play against Real Madrid last week, the Spurs boss admitted a true interest in the striker, but also said that his wage demands could end up stopping the deal from going through.

“Diego Forlan has been mentioned but we are not going to get near their wages,” said Redknapp.

“The chairman would not be paying £100,000 or more a week to players that is for sure.

“Forlan’s an interesting player. I didn’t speak to anyone about him, I just went and watched the game really.”

The prospect of adding a World Cup Golden Ball winner to an already strong squad has left Spurs fan on the edge of their seats. There are only a few days left for Redknapp to complete the deal, so Tottenham supporters won’t have to wait long to see if Forlan will be patrolling the pitch at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham should get him. Not having his best season this year suggests that his mind is on a move. The asking price looks right.

His salary is deservingly high – he scores a lot of goals and converts difficult chances (the types that our current strike force normally misses).

He’s what Tottenham needs right now – that special striker who can score out of nothing. Besides, with so many of our free kicks wasted, he will get quite a few goals from them.

He may be 31, but he can keep up his game until 35. He doesn’t use speed in his game, but intelligence. I’m also sure he will be willing to accept a slight salary cut to make the move.

I think he should be put on a par with Gareth Bale’s new contract terms. We’ll be getting an experienced head here in our striking force – something we badly need, especially in the later stages of the Champion’s League.

As an aside, for next season, I’d like to see Modric work on the finishing side of his game a lot more. He has to attack the box a lot more and score a lot more goals in addition to creating them.

If he can do this the club will go far and he will qualify to be paid on a par with Gareth Bale.
