Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o headline the shortlist of five players up for this year’s African Player of the Year award. The award comes at an exciting time for the continent following this summer’s vibrant World Cup in South Africa, and Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan also makes the shortlist as he represented his nation, Ghana, proudly.
Chelsea’s Salomon Kalou joins club teammate Drogba on the ballot, and Barcelona and Mali midfielder Seydou Keita round out the shortlist. Neither of these players, however, are favorites to win the award. On December 11th the shortlist will be cut down to three, hinting it may come down to Eto’o, Drogba, and Gyan.
As part of their annual awards process, the Confederation of African Football also names the National Team of the Year. This year’s shortlist contains Algeria, Egypt, and Ghana, all of which had success in 2010. Egypt won yet another African Cup of Nations eleven months ago, while Algeria overcame all odds to qualify for this summer’s World Cup in South Africa.
Ghana, meanwhile, must be considered the favorites for the award after their scintillating displays in South Africa. The Black Stars recorded the best finish for an African team in World Cup history as they suffered a heartbreaking defeat on penalties against Uruguay in the quarterfinals.
Both awards will be decided on December 20.

The world will once more be shocked if Drogba is given the title again. We should be serious and responsible. One should not be told again that Eto'o is the person. Drogba and the rest are just used to fill the space, for competition sake.
u r 150% :P
