Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has revealed his frustration at the way at least two members of the Sky Blues’ squad – youngsters Joe Hart and Adam Johnson – carried themselves during the international break.
The two players have been pictured in bars ever since leaving the Eastlands to join up with their national team last week and Mancini has spoken to them about the importance of restraint in order to protect the longevity of their careers.
Speaking to the Telegraph, the former Inter Milan coach stated that he has no problems allowing his players to go for a drink or two but admits that it baffles him to see England’s current football generation indulge in heavy drinking as soon as they have departed the football ground.
“For a young player it is important to always behave well. I can understand sometimes things can happen on holiday but it is important for them to behave. I have spoken to them,” Mancini asserted.
He elaborated: “In Italy the players don’t have the culture of drinking after the game. It is different. I understand it is not easy to change the English way. But Johnson and Joe are young, they play in the national team and they must change.
“For me, it is very frustrating. I don’t understand why a player must drink after the game. One drink is OK, but three, four, five, six until they are drunk, this is not good.
“I think it is better the players change their drinking because it’s not good for their careers. Now they are young, but when you get to 28, 29, you pay the price.”
