World Cup star: No real offers came in  | read this item

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan has hinted that part of the reason why he chose to commit to the La Liga club this summer is the lack of formal offers received for him.

The Uruguayan, who led his country to an incredible fourth-place finish in this summer’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa, was rewarded with the Golden Ball and in turn, became the object of interest from many of Europe’s elite clubs.

Even Sir Alex Ferguson, who formerly managed him in his disappointing spell at Old Trafford a few years ago, expressed his excitement over the player’s prospective return to the Premier League.

However, as far as Forlan is concerned, the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool only managed to make a splash in the media as Atletico did not receive any bids for their star striker over the summer.

“It’s just the papers. Never, never until now. They never sent any of them (offers),” he claimed in an interview with Sky Sports News.

As a result, the former Manchester United forward remains focused on the current season as he seeks to rebuild on Atletico’s Europa League success from last season. At the same time, however, he has clarified that he is certainly not ruling out a return to England.

“At the moment I am here, I have a contract with the club and there’s nothing else to say. (But) if I have the chance to go, I will go. You know, it’s like I always say, when I came here to Europe it’s because I left my home and I left everybody so I’m not attached to a team,” added the prolific striker.

He elaborated: “(You look at) the best offer you have and if you have a chance and it is good and it is good for the team and it is good for you, I don’t see it as bad – I see it is good and I will move.

“Everybody says things – that maybe you don’t want to go back. The time I had in England was great and I enjoyed it and if I had the chance to go back I would be really happy.”
