Manchester City and Tottenham kicked the new Premier League season off with a 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane. While the home side was largely impressive throughout the match thanks to a spirited attack, it was Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart that stole the headlines. The England international put on a fine performance in front of the onlooking Fabio Capello, earning a clean sheet that earned City a point.
Tottenham had a plethora of chances in the first half but couldn’t find a way past the man that kept Shay Given on the bench. Aaron Lennon couldn’t be stopped by the City defense as he continually got past his man and whipped in crosses. Particularly impressive was Lennon’s teammate on the other flank, Gareth Bale. The youngster picked up right where he left off at the end of last season, and in addition to some excellent attacking moves and crosses he also cannoned a shot off the post.
City’s strong midfield kept things tight in the middle of the pitch, with debutant Yaya Toure combining well with Nigel de Jong to keep Luka Modric quiet. Shaun Wright-Phillips was perhaps the man of the day for City in the attacking half as he mirrored the excellent performance of Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon by beating his man all afternoon. Carlos Tevez, as always, was the fulcrum of City’s attacking forays.
In the end neither side will be disappointed with their performance, but Tottenham will still be wondering how Joe Hart managed to keep them out. The late additions of Roman Pavlyuchenko and Robbie Keane to the match created more chances late on, but City leave White Hart Lane with a hard fought point.
