Hoops sign Mexico international

By | 27th July 2010

Celtic have officially confirmed the arrival of Mexico international Efrain Juarez from UNAM Pumas. The 22-year old defender signed, who also represented Barcelona at youth level, has signed a four-year deal at Parkhead.

Having already captured a host of other signings – including Charlie Mulgrew, Cha Du-Ri, Joe Ledley, Daryl Murphy, and Scunthorpe striker Gary Hooper – manager Neil Lennon left a strong impression on Juarez as he pondered a move to the Scottish Premier League a few days ago. According to the player, he was also attracting interest from Barcelona.

However, now that he has been unveiled as the latest member of the Bhoys squad, he has spoken of his excitement at committing to the club.

“(Joining Celtic) is the best decision I could have taken because the team has given me all the confidence (I need) and my aim is to help keep the club up there in the position it belongs,” he told Celtic’s official website moments before signing his long-term deal.

“The coach, Neil Lennon, is a great guy – a great person who welcomed me from the first moment, spoke to me and made me aware of what he wants from me. I am very grateful because they have welcomed me with open arms,” he added.

Lennon’s side will face Portuguese side Braga in a crucial UEFA Champions League qualifier tomorrow. Last week’s victory over Sporting Lisbon in the Fenway Football Challenge in Boston should serve as a good enough preparation for a roster that looks deep enough to make a decent run in Europe’s biggest club competition this season.
