The Italian Football Federation has confirmed that an inquiry will be made into recent comments made by AS Roma captain Francesco Totti in regards to his controversial accusation of the league’s officiating.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Totti alleged that the Giallorossi had been robbed of two Serie A titles. Furthermore, the former Italian international argued that little has changed in Italian football since the controversial match-fixing scandal that rocked the nation’s football hierarchy in 2006.

Ever since that scandal, Juventus and AC Milan have struggled in the Serie A, which means that the title has virtually been fought as a two-horse race in the last four seasons. According to Totti, reigning champions Inter Milan have benefitted from marginal decisions in two different seasons, namely the 2007-08 season as well as the one that just ended in May.

“While the others (Inter) are better they’ve always been granted favours. We’ve been robbed of two titles,” Totti claimed.

“Only the colours have changed. There’s always a lack of whistles being blown,” he added in regards to the performance of referees in the aftermath of the devastating scandal in 2006.

The veteran attacking midfielder elaborated: “The problem is that the others are better but they’re also safeguarded from everything. There’s always mistakes and you always try to think that things are done in good faith.

“We need to have cameras, we need to do something but then things would be different in the title and that’s why they won’t put them in,” he concluded while supporting the implementation of replay technology.
