Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben believes that his former club Chelsea has made a huge mistake in letting Joe Cole sign for Liverpool this summer. According to the Blues, negotiations with Cole during his free agency did not result in an agreement due to the player’s high wage demands of around £90,000 per week.

As far as Robben is concerned, though, his former Blues teammate is the kind of player who should be held on to, regardless of the costs that are to be incurred. In fact, the Dutchman compared Cole’s ball-dribbling abilities to that of Barcelona’s Argentine superstar Lionel Messi. With the arrival of Cole, Robben also believes that the Reds’ attack is on part with that of the Catalan outfit.

“With a front three of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Cole I think Liverpool will be a real force in the Premier League,” Robben told the Daily Star.

“Last year was a freak year, but if those three click I can see them seriously challenging for the title. You look at those as a front three and you struggle to find a better front three in Europe – and I include Barcelona’s in that,” he added.

“I read (Steven) Gerrard’s words about Joe being as good as Messi on the ball and I couldn’t agree more. After training with him for so long I can tell you some of the things he can do with a football are as good as anything I have ever seen.

“If Joe is now played in a more central position he will score and create a lot of goals, I see him as a real runner for player of the season. He is not just about tricks, though his vision is fantastic. The chances he will create for Torres will help Liverpool to have a trophy-winning season,” Robben emphasized about the prospects of the Anfield outfit.
