Chelsea’s title defense will have to begin without star goalkeeper Petr Cech, who has suffered a calf injury during the club’s pre-season training. During his one-month absence in the second half of last season, the Blues lacked composure in the back and looked out of sorts a few times.
Some even argue that their Champions League loss to eventual winners Inter Milan came largely because they could not rely on the Czech international to stop the Nerazzuri from scoring a critical away goal. Regardless, there is nothing that can be done about the unavailability of Cech now, for at least another month.
The Blues have thus come to terms with this disappointing news. A statement on the Stamford Bridge club’s official website read: “Scans have shown Petr Cech has torn a calf muscle in his right leg and the goalkeeper is expected to be out for a month.”
As reported here at Premiership Talk yesterday, the reigning Premier League champions also face pressure from Real Madrid to keep defender Ricardo Carvalho in their squad for the upcoming season.
Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly made an inquiry about the Portuguese international’s availability but as long as Carlo Ancelotti’s priorities are concerned, Carvalho must stay at the club to stabilize any defensive concerns by the time the West Londoners host West Bromwich Albion in their season-opener on August 14.
