Add midfielder Steven Pienaar to the growing list of Everton players who are being pursued by elite teams across Europe. According to the Daily Mail, last season’s treble winners Inter Milan are considering a move for the South African, which is poised to cause more frustration for Toffees boss David Moyes as he is already struggling to keep his squad together.

Dan Gosling has made a move towards Newcastle while Mikel Arteta and Phil Jagielka have been targetted for a high-profile move by Manchester City and Arsenal, respectively. To the relief of the Merseyside club, though, Pienaar’s situation involves more complications than that of any of the aforementioned players.

Following Italy’s poor World Cup campaign this summer, the country’s football association has decided to restrict every Serie A team to adding only one non-EU player to their squad from now onwards. Before the arrival of Rafa Benitez, Brazilian prodigy Philippe Coutinho was being lined up for a move to the Giuseppe Meazza but the former Liverpool manager is a known admirer of Pienaar.

Having faced Pienaar several times in the Merseyside derby, Benitez likely knows very well that a £15 million deal for the South African will be worth it for the pace that he can bring to the Nerazzuri squad. In fact, if both parties can wait for another few months, the transfer can be completed for no fee when Pienaar’s current contract at Goodison Park expires in January.
