Top 10 World Cup Defenders  | read this item

The 2010 World Cup may be over, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still a lot to talk about. This World Cup saw a lot of high quality defensive performances from most of the teams – even the unlikely ones – so it only makes sense that this top ten list is comprised of the best World Cup defenders ever. The lads over at World Cup Odds, with their phenomenal World Cup tips, have created their own top ten list of the best defenders. Here is a small sample of what you will find on that list.

Franz Beckenbauer – Germany

Regarded as one of, if not the, classiest German footballers of all-time, Beckenbauer anchored the back of Germany’s defense as the sweeper. This led to a long and illustrious international career as he amassed 105 caps for his country, while scoring 14 goals in the process.

Fabio Cannavaro – Italy

The Italian super defender is not one to be messed with. In 2006, Cannavaro became the first defender to win the FIFA World Player of the Year Award and win the FIFA World Cup in the same year. His 136 caps makes him the most capped player of all-time.

George Cohen – England

Everybody loves an unsung hero, and that is exactly why George Cohen makes the cut. Cohen played right back for the 1966 England squad that ended up winning the World Cup. Bobby Moore was regarded as the leader, but Cohen did what needed to get done, and helped England hoist the ultimate prize.
