Much of the football gossip of late has revolved around the controversial moment when Barcelona defenders Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol forced a Barcelona shirt on Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas during Spain’s World Cup celebrations. Ever since the midfielder was spotted smiling helplessly in the Catalan colors, he has been scrutinized severely in the media.
While Cesc’s representatives, including his father, have had to clarify that it was only a playful moment of celebration, it remains to be seen whether the Spaniard’s loyalty really lies with the club he captains in the Barclays Premier League.
Meanwhile, speaking of players sporting another team’s shirt, a far more pleasant moment occurred when German World Cup star Bastian Schweinsteiger was seen playing a pick-up game of football while wearing Frank Lampard’s England jersey.
The two players exchanged shirts after Germany’s 4-1 win over England in the rivals’ Round-of-16 clash. Schweinsteiger was subsequently seen tossing the jersey towards his girlfriend in the crowd and apparently, the couple is taking great care of the shirt that Lamps wore when hammering home England’s perfectly legitimate second goal that was waved off infamously.
One can’t help but question whether Schweinsteiger’s support for Lampard is just a tribute to the England midfielder’s exemplary attitude. At the moment, Lampard’s Chelsea appears to have fallen behind to Real Madrid in the race to sign Schweinsteiger’s German teammate Sami Khedira from Stuttgart. Can this development eventually open the door for Bastian to join Lampard at Stamford Bridge? Only time, and of course Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, will tell.
