Joleon Lescott believes that Manchester City have done sufficient rebuilding to achieve higher objectives next season. The England international, who joined the Sky Blues last season, spent a major part of last season recovering from injuries.
Having seen his side lose out to Tottenham in the race for the coveted fourth place late last leason, Lescott is looking forward to chasing Champions League qualification all over again. The former Everton defender believes that the burning desire to overcome past frustrations will be the key factor propelling the Citizens forward next season.
“The experience of missing out on fourth spot last season means we’ll try that bit harder. Any team can look back and wonder if they had only done this or that,” he told The Sun.
“It’s hard when you drop points to Hull and Burnley at home,” he added.
In regards to City’s massive spending spree thus far in the summer, Lescott is content but believes that no major changes are needed to the current squad. According to him, the most important requirement for the entire squad, including himself, is a higher level of consistency.
“We beat Chelsea twice to prove we can do it. A lot of our players have come from clubs where they have won things. Being injured was difficult but I wasn’t overly happy with my performances so I will be looking to find more consistency,” he concluded.
Reports have it that although Eastlands boss Roberto Mancini plans to continue spending on new players, he seems to be in agreement with Lescott over keeping the core group of City players together. A great example of this notion is the club’s refusal to respond to Liverpool’s interest in Micah Richards.
