Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has confirmed that the Black Cats are interested in bringing defender Sol Campbell to the Stadium of Light. Campbell is available on a free transfer after his contract with Arsenal ended this summer, and the former England international has already held talks with the club from the northeast.

“We have had a conversation with Sol, I’ve known the lad a long, long time,” said Bruce.

“He’s obviously got some decisions to make.

“We’ve shown him around and shown him what we’ve got, so we will see what develops over the next 48 hours.

“But I think Sol is getting married next weekend and then is away on honeymoon so I wouldn’t have thought there would be much before that happens.”

A potential stumbling block in the deal could be the wage demands of Campbell, rumored to be in the region of £35,000 per week.

The Black Cats are also reportedly looking at bringing Ghana defender John Mensah back to the club after a successful loan spell, and goalkeeper Craig Gordon has fueled the rumors by admitting he’d love to see the World Cup standout back in Sunderland.

“John had an outstanding World Cup. I don’t know what stage the talks are at, but it would be good to see him back,” said Gordon.

“He would certainly be welcomed back by the lads because when he played he was a big influence for us last season.”
