Redknapp hopes defender pulls through  | read this item

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has made it clear that this season could be a pivotal one in the case of defender Jonathan Woodgate. The center back has had a career plagued by injuries, and his short spell at White Hart Lane thus far has been no different. With the season fast approaching, there are still concerns over the former Real Madrid player’s fitness.

“It is make or break for Jonathan,” said Redknapp.

“He has got to come back and play and be fit because if he is not ready for the start of the season it will be difficult. He is running, but it will be different when he gets the boots out and starts playing.

“Hopefully he will be all right because he is a great guy and a fantastic player – one of the best centre-backs around.

“You take it day by day with him and see how he progresses.”

Now more than ever Woodgate is needed at Tottenham as the Spurs are in the UEFA Champions League for the first time ever. The North London outfit will also be keeping a close eye on the fitness of Ledley King, who was injured once again while at the World Cup with England. The two central defenders are key parts of a Tottenham side that finished in fourth last season, and their health could propel the club further.
