Perhaps the only story more romantic than Ghana’s deep run into this summer’s World Cup was the sensational form of a sleeping football giant: Uruguay. Backed by the excellent form of strikers Luis Suarez and a reignited Diego Forlan, Uruguay finished in fourth place, putting the South Americans back on the map.

Not only are they going home as heroes, but leading goalscorer Diego Forlan picked up a piece of history as he secured the Golden Ball award, given to the tournament’s most outstanding player. Forlan, always gracious in victory, was full of thanks.

“It’s as great as it is unexpected. I never even imagined something like this, nor did I have my sights set on it,” said the Atletico Madrid striker.

“As I’m a striker, I perhaps could have seen myself chasing the Golden Shoe, and in fact I came close. That would have been more normal. But to go from that to winning the prize for the best player… I’m enjoying it and I’m delighted, but I’m very aware that it’s the result of the spectacular tournament the team has had. It’s another reward for this positive period for Uruguayan football.”

Neverthless, Forlan insists that his sole focus remains on improving further, despite his advancing years.

“I’ve won other awards during my career and I’m very grateful, but I don’t let them stop my feet from staying on the ground. I’ve got parents who taught me key values and brothers and sisters who help me stay on the right path. Everything is the result of hard work, so I’ll keep working to try and improve,” Forlan concluded.
