Vicente Del Bosque has tasted plenty of success as both a player and a manager but he admits that none of his past challenges compare to the all-important World Cup final against Holland. As far as tactics are concerned, though, the Spain coach insists that the team must strive to recreate the attractive brand of football it has displayed not only in South Africa this summer, but also throughout the triumphant Euro 2008 campaign.
Ever since that summer two years ago, the entire country came together and Del Bosque was accredited with the prosperity of such a strong national spirit. After all, even areas where the regional flag precedes the national flag were forced to proudly wave the latter in support of Spain’s exciting performances.
Although the World Cup started on a shocking low note for the Spaniards when they lost 1-0 to a disciplined Swiss side, Del Bosque’s men have picked up the momentum ever since and he believes that lifting the trophy can certainly become a reality if his team continues to focus on keeping possession as well as fluid passing.
“We have our own style and never did we deviate from that. Even in the tough matches against Portugal and Germany, we played the possession game with Xavi and (Andreas) Iniesta in the midfield. A Spain victory would only make the game more popular,” said Del Bosque.
Some observers may argue with Del Bosque that against the third-place Germans, Spain could not convert their high possession and beautiful passing, eventually needing Carles Puyol to head in the winning goal from a corner. Therefore, it remains to be seen how effective the Spaniards can be against a clinical Dutch side with the biggest prize in football on the line.
