Due to Barcelona’s financial constraints, the Catalans may not be able to pull off a move for Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano after all. That shouldn’t be cause for too much concern as far as the Argentine international is concerned, though. Former Anfield chief Rafa Benitez is reportedly targeting Mascherano to anchor the midfield at an Inter Milan side that could lose playmaker Wesley Sneijder to Manchester United.
Argentina’s World Cup campaign started amidst the midfielder’s incomplete negotiations with the Merseysiders over the prospect of a new deal. Mascherano has repeatedly cited adaptation problems for his family as his primary reason to seek a move away from England. If linking up with compatriots Diego Milito, Esteban Cambiasso, and Walter Samuel isn’t enough of an incentive, Rafa believes that his own close relationship with Mascherano will convince the unsettled player to move to the San Siro.
Mascherano’s agent Marco Piccioli told the Daily Star that the Argentine could soon reunite with Benitez, possibly in a deal that will also take Reds full-back Glen Johnson to last season’s treble-winners. However, Piccioli insisted that both parties need to remain patient as talks over such a deal can very well end up being prolonged.
“I know that Mascherano and Benitez have a great relationship. However, sometimes this is not enough. We will see. A deal can only happen towards the last part of the transfer market,” he said.
