Sir Alex Ferguson has once again backed Wayne Rooney to overcome the hurt caused by England’s early exit in the World Cup. While he was implicitly referring to the emotional hurt as well, the Manchester United boss basically aimed to clarify any fears over the striker’s fitness.
“There is nothing wrong with the lad or his fitness. He’s relaxing on holiday in Barbados and I expect him to come back refreshed for the new season,” Fergie told The Mail.
Rooney struggled with injuries towards the end of an impressive last season with his club. He was overtaken in the race for the golden shoe by Chelsea’s Didier Drogba on the final day of the campaign and was slow to recover as he joined the England squad following United’s second-place finish in the Premier League.
Many observers were quick to point out that Wazza looked frustrated in the build-up to the World Cup and his infamous outburst at an official during England’s last warm-up game verified this notion. But it was his lack of presence during the tournament itself that elevated concerns regarding his fitness levels as well.
Hence, Ferguson’s comments should serve as a clarification that Rooney is, in fact, carrying no injuries at this point and getting some rest during the Red Devils’ pre-season tour should only help him in feeling refreshed.
