Manchester City shot stopper Shay Given has revealed his quiet glee at Robert Green making the error that cost England two points against the United States. Given is just glad that it wasn’t club teammate Joe Hart, as the Irishman has seen too many goalkeepers in the past shattered after a big international error.
Given pointed to the backlash against former England international Scott Carson. Carson made a big time error similar to Green’s in an England jersey, and since then has not turned out for the Three Lions.
“Joe might not thank me for saying it but I just feel that had Joe made the mistake that Robert made, which is easily done, the backlash would really have been heavy on him,” Hart said to The Mirror.
“For such a young guy it could have hampered him for the rest of his career. So I think it was the right decision.
“Looking back Scott Carson played against Croatia at Wembley, made that mistake and I don’t think he has been back in the squad since.
“He has been lambasted for that and its very tough when you make a mistake as a goalkeeper. You do get a hard time. So I think it was the right decision not to play Joe.
“The experience he will have gained being there and training every day and even from the media pressure, the pressure of the whole country – that will stand him in good stead for future tournaments.
“I think he will definitely be England’s goalkeeper for future tournaments to come,” Given concluded.
