Dutch striker Robin van Persie has revealed his frustration at his lack of goals during this summer’s World Cup. The Arsenal striker is Holland’s best striker, but has found himself on the score sheet just once en route to his side’s quarterfinal clash with Brazil.

“I am not scoring and that eats away at me – at every striker, I think,” Van Persie said. “I’ve had a few small chances. I just want to score.”

“I’m doing my absolute best, I can’t do more than that,” he added after his side’s win over Slovakia. “I desperately want to score and give assists but it didn’t work out for me today.”

van Persie was clearly a frustrated figure after he was substituted during the Round of 16 match against Slovakia, and much has been said of his exit from the pitch.

“I wanted to finish the game. I thought they would take risks in the last 10 minutes and I wanted to exploit that,” he said. “I could see spaces opening up and I wanted to use them, so I was a bit shocked when I had to go off.”

Dutch manager Bert van Marwijk denied any reports of a rift following his decision to take van Persie off.

“I shook his hand and understood that he was disappointed, that’s not a bad thing,” Van Marwijk said. “Everyone wants to play the whole game.”

The Dutch now take on Brazil in a mouthwatering quarterfinal clash.
