If being one of the highlights of Bayern Munich’s impressive attack en route to the UEFA Champions League Final this past season wasn’t enough, Thomas Muller decided to turn heads in the World Cup as well. Who could have thought that an inexperienced 20-year old Bundesliga striker would make a world-class center-half like John Terry look like an absolutely amateur?
Germany coach Joachim Loew certainly didn’t expect such a stunning World Cup campaign from Muller despite being aware of the youngster’s talent.
“It’s unbelievable to think that he is still only 20 years old. Thomas has a lot of quality and is fantastic in front of goal,” Loew said about the awe-inspiring qualities of the rising star after the Germans’ emphatic 4-1 defeat of England.
A lot had been said about the lack of depth that this German squad reflected on paper, particularly given the absence of their beloved captain, Michael Ballack.
So far, barring a forgettable 1-0 loss to Serbia, this team has responded ideally to the challenge. Proudly fielding an entire squad worth of domestic talent, Loew and his players have once again showed the world that their unity sets them apart in big tournaments, which is in sharp contrast with the individual star-power of other major European nations such as France, Italy, and of course, England. The next challenge, though, is not overcoming a continental opponent.
In the quarterfinals, Germany will face a dominant Argentina side that is yet to experience failure in South Africa this summer. Nevertheless, Loew’s young Germans – led by Muller – will be up to the task, setting up a mouth-watering quarterfinal repeat of 2006.
Can Germany overcome Argentina and possibly win this summer’s World Cup? Have your say below!
