Ghana star Asamoah Gyan was injured in training on Monday. The Associated Press reports that Gyan injured his ankle during his team’s training session for Friday’s quarterfinal encounter with Uruguay. He was seen wearing an ice pack around his ankle as he left the training ground Monday evening.
The good news for Ghana fans is that Gyan is not expected to miss Friday’s encounter. It’s the first time that Ghana has advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup, and as the sole African team remaining in the tournament they have picked up a new set of fans.
The striker leads his team in scoring at this summer’s World Cup having netted three of his team’s goals. Most notable was Gyan’s extra time winner against the United States after he beat the American backline with his pace and skillfully powered the ball past a stranded Tim Howard.
Following his side’s dramatic Round of 16 win, Gyan declared himself the “happiest man in the world.”
“I am the happiest man in the world. In 2006 we made the second round, now we have gone a step further. We’ve made Ghana and the whole of Africa proud,” said Gyan.
