Coming off of a disappointing end to his Manchester City season, Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz is now hoping to lead his country to glory in this summer’s World Cup in South Africa. The striker has revealed that his camp has set a target of the quarterfinals, and coming out of Group F means the South American country has a chance.
“Paraguay have never been involved in the quarter-finals, that is what we want to achieve and see if we can go on from there,” said Santa Cruz. “It would be a good World Cup if we could do that.
“It’s a miracle to be involved in such a great tournament, something Paraguay has been blessed with and we are very proud, coming from such a small country,” he continued.
“It’s probably because we are so down-to-earth. The football is not the best, we don’t have a lot of resources, we have don’t infrastructure or stadiums like other countries have.”
Paraguay are joined in Group F by world champions Italy, tournament minnows New Zealand, and an up and coming Slovakia side featuring the likes of Marek Hamsik. Paraguay has never made it past the second round of the World Cup, but they have accomplished that feat three times in their history.
