Manchester United is being linked with an ambitious player plus cash offer for Juventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. The 32 year old goalkeeper is reportedly viewed by Sir Alex Ferguson as the perfect replacement to a much older Edwin van der Sar after the Dutchman hangs up his boots. CaughtOffside reports that United is ready to make a formal offer for the goalkeeper over the summer.

Buffon would bring much needed experience to the United net, filling a role that both Ben Foster and Tomas Kuszczak have failed to perform well in. The Italian has won not only the now defunct UEFA Cup and the prestigious Serie A, but has collected football’s highest honor by winning the World Cup. With a possible eight years left in his career, Buffon has time for one final major move, and the Premier League could be the world’s largest stage for him to shine on.

CaughtOffside reports that Sir Alex Ferguson could be prepared to part with third string goalkeeper Ben Foster as part of the deal for the £14 million rated Buffon, but other names such as Federico Macheda and Anderson are also being discussed. Ferguson has already stressed that he is willing to make “one or two” changes to his squad this summer, and with van der Sar approaching the end of his career United are looking for a replacement.

Whatever the case, United’s attention is squarely focused on this Sunday’s crunch match against Stoke City at Old Trafford. The Red Devils need to collect all three points to have any shot at winning this year’s Premier League title, and for that to happen Wigan Athletic need to pick up at least one point against leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Premiership Talk will be providing live coverage of all the action this Sunday!
