Heading into another weekend of football action, El Clasico appeared to be the biggest attraction in continental Europe. As it turned out, however, that highly anticipated fixture ended in a rather one-sided game with Barcelona dominating in a 2-0 win over a Real Madrid side missing its key playmaker Kaka.

Subsequently, the Italian Serie A got the opportunity to plug in and provide with some missing entertainment. Fortunately, that is exactly what happened as thrilling twists continued to feature in a league that has been characterized as a one-horse title race for the last four years.

Mirko Vucinic and Marco Cassetti scored in the Gaillorossi’s 2-1 win against relegation-threatened Atalanta to capitalize on reigning champions Inter Milan’s highly competitive 2-2 draw at Fiorentina. Now, the men from the capital find themselves atop the Serie A standings for the first time since 2007 with Jose Mourinho’s side unusually trailing in the second position.

Roma fans surely believe that their talented team has the character and ability to hold on to their lead en route to finally bringing home the Scudetto. To help their cause, the Nerazzuri will also be distracted by a tough Champions League semifinal against European champions Barca.

Mourinho has made it known that he feels unsettled in Italy and is poised to leave no matter how Inter’s season ends. But before he leaves, he has to resolve the dilemma regarding which competition the club should prioritize. The daunting task of facing the unstoppable Catalans surely arrives at the wrong time for Inter as it jeopardizes their chances of finally claiming Champions League glory.

Therefore, in hindsight, it seems only logical for The Special One to urge his team to invest a major portion of their energy towards claiming European glory. But is it even worth it to risk their domestic reign for a highly unlikely Champions League title?
