Inter Milan overcame years of European failure on Tuesday evening as they overcame a tricky opponent in Chelsea. The Italian side took the advantage in the first leg at the San Siro as they won 2-1, and Samuel Eto’o's goal at Stamford Bridge earned Jose Mourinho yet another win over his former employer.

Thiago Motta, a player rejected from Barcelona, enjoyed a great run out for the Nerazzuri and was not short of words after the final whistle. Motta was full of praise for both his own performance and those of his teammates, and the midfielder hailed a “fantastic match.”

“It was a fantastic match,” Motta said. “Playing with two midfielders was not as difficult as first imagined, because I had attackers like [Goran] Pandev and [Samuel] Eto’o who dropped back a lot.

“It is more tiring for them to continuously come back and help us. I knew that I would be playing in this match, and I was ready to do so, as every player should be for every game.

“I am very happy because it was one of my best matches. The critics in the past were right to say what they did, because when someone plays badly, they are right. I know that I can do better.”

Motta and his teammates will now be anxiously awaiting Friday’s Champions League draw, as the defending Serie A champions aim to avoid some potentially huge clashes against sides such as Manchester United.
