Major League Soccer has already tried persuading La Liga teams Barcelona and Real Madrid to invest in their teams and/or start new franchises, but the league can’t give up on another European League. It’s been reported that MLS commissioner Don Garber, while at SoccerEx, has been talking with some English Premier League teams to invest in the league so that Major League Soccer can grow internationally. While English fans are tired of having American business owners buying Premier League teams, the opposite would be true for American soccer.
What American soccer needs now is better exposure, and having new revenue sources is also helpful for the league to grow. By having more money in the league it can be filtered to the teams, and better players can be brought in which will attract more fan interest to help grow the league. Instead of having the better international players coming in on their last leg to finish their career, wouldn’t it be great to be able to pay them a better wage and have them play while they are still in the prime of their career?
I’m glad to hear Commissioner Garber is still thinking outside the box and hopefully that thinking will grow the league so that league play improves – and better yet the interest improves worldwide.
