This week I, Roddy Graham, start a new predictions page for the biggest games in English football. This weekend promises to be a cracker with five Premier League games over three days and with all four FA Cup quarter finals also being played.
Arsenal v Burnley (3pm Saturday)
Burnley have one point away from home all season, whereas Arsenal have started to hit real form and are right back in the title race. There’s only one way the points are going in this one – home win. The only question is by how many? They may be without Aaron Ramsey after last week’s horror tackle by Ryan Shawcross, but I still think they are good enough to win by at least three goals.
Prediction: Arsenal win 4-1
Wet Ham v Bolton (3pm Saturday)
This is a big game at the bottom end of the table as two teams who could end up in the Championship next season – unless they improve in the last few games – meet at Upton Park. Bolton won last time out against Wolves but West Ham are a decent team at home, so I think the points will be going to the Hammers’ way but it will be close.
Prediction: West Ham win 2-1
Wolves v Manchester United (5.30pm Saturday)
Wolves fielded a weakened team in the reverse fixture earlier in the season and got a fine for doing so. A repeat of that will be unlikely here but it will probably still make no difference. Although Wolves have beaten Spurs and drawn with Liverpool at home, Manchester United are another proposition, and with Wayne Rooney in the best form he has ever been in, an away win seems more than likely.
Prediction: Manchester United win 3-1
Everton v Hull (4pm Sunday)
Everton have really turned a corner in recent times and were unlucky not get a point against Spurs last weekend after a cracking second half performance. Hull are in dire straights and even the presence of Jimmy Bullard won’t get the team a result at Goodison.
Prediction: Everton win 3-0
Wigan v Liverpool (8pm Monday)
Wigan are out of form and Liverpool seem to have found form. That will therefore equal an away win then, right? Not necessarily. The pitch at the DW Stadium makes playing football very difficult and could favor the home side. They need the points more than Liverpool and will be fighting for every ball. I think a draw could be the end result here.
Prediction: Draw 1-1
Portsmouth v Birmingham (12.30pm Saturday)
The league’s crisis club meets a side that has overachieved in many eyes all season. Portsmouth need the money from this cup run and would love to continue the run to Wembley but Birmingham are a well organised side who will also think they can go all the way in this competition. I fancy a draw to take the tie to St Andrews.
Prediction: Draw 1-1
Fulham v Tottenham (5.20pm Saturday)
Fulham seem to be the cup specialists this season after reaching the last 16 of the Europa League and the quarterfinals of the FA Cup. Spurs will want to win this match just as much as their London rivals but Fulham are excellent at home under Roy Hodgson and I can see them making the last four in this one.
Prediction: Fulham win 2-1
Reading v Aston Villa (1.45pm Sunday)
Reading have been the surprise package in the FA Cup this season after beating Liverpool and Burnley and will hope their luck can continue against the Carling Cup finalists. Sadly I feel Villa will have the edge in this one and will be booking another place at Wembley for their fans this season.
Prediction: Aston Villa win 3-1
Chelsea v Stoke (4pm Sunday)
Are Chelsea in a crisis? Off the field problems and poor results in their last two matches mean a shock could be on the cards here against a Stoke side who defeated Manchester City in the previous round. But I think that, although Stoke will give their all, Chelsea will have just enough to get past them and book their spot in the last four.
Prediction: Chelsea win 2-1
