Manchester United midfielder Anderson’s dreams of making the Brazilian World Cup roster and getting back into the Manchester United side were ended today as he ruptured his cruciate ligament in the mid-week game against West Ham. This season has been one of misfortune for the player as he struggled for form and had a reported run in with Alex Ferguson after travelling back to Brazil after a series of poor performances.
While Anderson is often much maligned by the press, he is still only 21 and has shown plenty of potential that he can develop into a quality midfielder if he can find consistency as a player. He is a good box to box midfielder and is a useful dribbler of the ball. Compared to Michael Carrick, who often disappears when the pressure comes on, Anderson has more long term value as a midfielder. He may not have been at his best this season but his first team opportunities have been cut through the excellent form of Darren Fletcher.
It is not the first time in his career that Anderson has suffered a serious injury. During his spell with Porto, a broken leg interrupted his development – so once again he is faced with a tough, long road to recoverery. Hopefully Anderson’s injury will finally quicken the comeback of Owen Hargreaves as United feel the strain from injuries to their side.
Finally, United’s battle for the first silverware of the season on Sunday in the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa is set to be a great spectacle as a Villa side finding form again come up against a United team that have so often struggled when coming up against teams in the top half of the league this season.
Wayne Rooney is key to any success United will have and if Villa can keep him quiet they certainly have a chance of an upset and bringing some silverware to the Midlands club.
