Much has been said of Manchester United’s historic and convincing win over AC Milan at the San Siro yesterday, but one thing that isn’t being discussed much is the performance of one of the world’s most popular players: Ronaldinho. The samba star showed glimpses of his brilliant best during the match against England’s reigning champions, but too often fans were reminded of the disappointing downfall of the Brazilian’s career.
It didn’t take long for the former greatest player in the world to show his talent. In just the third minute Ronaldinho gracefully and powerfully unleashed a volley towards the United goal. Granted, the ball was deflected before heading past Edwin van der Sar into the United goal, but his raw control on the volley showed just why he became the most coveted player in the world.
At other points during the first half – and on very rare occasions in the second half – Ronaldinho showed just how talented he is with the ball at his feet. At times it looked like the ball was glued to his feet – the majestic midfield maestro could turn in any direction at not even a moment’s notice, often leaving the United midfielders and defenders in a trance. His pass to find Clarence Seedorf showed his impeccable vision, along with several no-look passes that broke through the United back line.
Unfortunately, though, the player often accused for being overweight and more interested in partying showed why his reputation has dropped considerably since he left Barcelona. Ronaldinho hardly tracked back into the Milan half in the second half, and that period was full of numerous United attacks. Even when Rafael learned how to handle the trickery of his fellow countryman, Ronaldinho was not even remotely interested in fighting to get the ball back.
My colleague here at Premiership Talk and Serie A aficionado, Mike Diamente, says that ‘Dinho’s disappearing act in the second half might not be down to lack of effort.
“They had a game on Friday so maybe he was tired because of that,” argued Diamente in reference to the club’s 3-2 win over Udinese. Even then, Ronaldinho was generously subbed off with 15 minutes to spare, indicating that his fitness levels might not be where they need to be.
Ultimately, it looks like former AC Milan manager Arrigo Sacchi has it right. The Italian believes that Ronaldinho is merely a luxury to a talented, experienced, and high-potential side – a luxury that sometimes the Rossoneri cannot afford.
“Milan defended with unfortunately too few men. They do not play total football,” said Sacchi following the club’s loss against United.
“Ronaldinho plays, though well, only for 20 minutes out of the 90. Defending with only seven players in the long run will be trouble.”
There’s absolutely no denying Ronaldinho’s talent, but now it’s his turn to find some hunger, determination, and – perhaps most importantly – some fitness.
