Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack has launched a scathing attack on Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger following Chelsea’s convincing 2-0 victory over the title pretenders. Ballack heavily criticized Arsenal’s static tactical approach to games, saying that the Gunners have one style of play and can’t deal with teams that counteract that style.

Furthermore, Ballack has ruled Arsenal out of the title race, pointing to their repeated failures to finish strong in the past. The German midfielder has also grown tired of Wenger’s persistent excuses.

“If you look now, it appears to be a race between Manchester United and us,” he said.

“But four weeks ago, you could see how it was set up and it can go quick when teams lose points.

“We wanted to do our job. We knew the way Arsenal play. We could see it in our first game against them and against United — it is always the same style.

“If you play tactics like we did, you can beat them. Wenger says things like this always when he loses, to find an excuse. But football is not possession of the ball and playing a nice pass.

“Football is about winning games and that is what United showed when they played them and that is what we did.

“This season and the season before they showed they weren’t able to win the league.”

For all his talk about winning Michael Ballack has not actually won anything yet. If things go as they are now it is not unlikely for United to overtake Chelsea at the end of the season. And should it happen Chelsea will join Arsenal in the also runs boat. Will it be fitting to say then about Chelsea that “this season and the season before they showed they weren’t able to win the league”?

Practically speaking, part of me is willing to accept the fact that the title race is over for us once again. But I won’t go ahead and completely agree with Ballack. A few weeks ago, another Chelsea player – John Terry – ruled us out of the title race when we fell 11 points behind, which is a couple more than we actually trail by at the moment. So if I were Chelsea and United, I won’t write us out of it just yet. I mean even if it is over for the Gunners, there is no point in other teams reminding us that because despite all our shortcomings, who knows where a couple more twists in the title race would lead us.
