Yesterday’s big news was the High Court’s decision to lift a gag order won by John Terry in the case of his scandal with Wayne Bridge’s former girlfriend. Bridge was distraught at the news of his former teammate – and captain – having an affair with his former girlfriend, especially considering Terry is married and has two children.

Terry’s confirmed affair with his former teammate’s girlfriend – who is also the father of Wayne Bridge’s child – has thrown the England camp into turmoil. Questions are flying around the media about whether the two will be able to be on the same pitch, or even the same squad, together.

There’s no debating why Bridge should be so angry and distraught at these events. Terry has proven that even as a club captain he cannot be trusted to look out for his teammates, and his dishonesty is only one more incident in a long list of mess-ups.

In December of 2009 it was discovered that Terry was selling unauthorized tours of Chelsea’s training grounds for £10,000. Additionally, Terry has come under heavy criticism in the past for two other known affairs. Perhaps one of the most high profile Terry incidents was when he was found mocking American tourists in a pub less than 24 hours after the September 11th attacks.

Football fans will also remember the more recent incidents involving Terry’s parents. His mother was caught shoplifting £800 of goods, and his dad was caught in a sting operation dealing cocaine.

All of these events show what a complete and utter disgrace Terry has been off the pitch. It’s only a matter of time before his teammates stop trusting him and start turning on him, and in a World Cup year that’s the last thing that fans of the Three Lions want.

Fans will surely try to defend Terry for his on-pitch performances, but there is no way to excuse his numerous off-pitch antics.

  1. Alfred says:

The only instance in which this matters is if this affects how the team feels about Terry. If they feel betrayed then he should definitely lose the strip, maybe even go. If they feel like this is an overblown cheap media dig, then he should stay. Capello will handle it. Nothing else to say.

  2. Paul Jeffrey says:

he did score a good header yesterday though!
Give the England armband to Frank Lampard

  3. Oscar Pye-Jeary says:

I meant shouldn’t in that first sentence btw…D’oh!

  4. Oscar Pye-Jeary says:

What everyone who’s saying he should loose the captaincy are forgetting is that a) this is to do with football, and specifically the position of captaincy, b) that whether you like it or not, the role is expected in include other social responsibilities and c) it will and has, have massive derogatory effects if he stays on

If he stays as captain there will be a massive media shit storm that will envelop the world cup build up. England will be in a position of going into the 1st WC they’ve had the chance to win in donkeys years with a press actively willing to destory their captain and a fanbase who in the majority hate their own leader…this is farcical surely?

Add to this the possibility that this will seriously destabilize the team, having a captain who had knobbed one of his teammates wives and you have a whole host of problems leading into a WC…all brought on by the captain

The scenario of Terry relinquishing the captaincy see’s the media placated, the fans placated, and possible player greivances placated and the sponsors and affiliates placated by a less damaging and controversial ambassadorial figure head

Lets not forget that when Capello re-appointed Terry it was hardly a universally praised or expected decision…This whole rubbish that Terry is the only possible of leading England has been mythically resurrected purely as a rebutal to the moral indignation caused by these revelations…Terry can still stay in the team and act as a leader on the pitch (if he suddenly started to play shit because he wasn’t captain then he was never really captain material in the 1st place) whilst going into the world cup with a unanimously supportive media and fanbase, plus any animosity in the team quelled…

Surely this is the most sensible solution all round??…Those defending Terry are being just as short sighted, naive and reactionary as those instantly condemning him….He does, in fact, need to go

    • Johnny English says:

“He does, in fact, need to go”

On person will decide this, and that person is Capello. That, is a fact.

Being an Italian he’s not as cynical as many manoeuvred by the media in our country (he had to deal with Gazzetta Dello Sport in Italy, far worse than the media here) and will make his mind up on a footballing basis.

In that sense, and with all the indignation and scandal aside, JT is still the best captain on the pitch, bar none.

  5. j6pini says:

Johnny English, you need to see a psychotherapist to get over your severe case of xenophobia…and an English teacher (it’s “they’re”). And this country also gave you the personal computer, by the way…not to mention a World War II victory…and we kicked your asses in the period between 1775 and 1783…but I’m not that upset over your comment. I like England and its soccer 1st division. Yeah, I say soccer because that’s the word in our language, but it’s not disrespectful. If we’re on this site it’s because we like it, and there’s a fair chance we don’t like some of the other American sports to which you alluded.

    • Johnny English says:

No severe case of xenophobia, just can’t stand people who have little idea about a) our game and b) the media in this country and how it works, swallowing and reacting to their crap just as they want you to.

There has been a consistent and sustained campaign by both the Mail and NOTW for the past several months to get Terry removed as captain because he doesn’t play ball with them, they would rather have Mr ABH Gerrard or prostitute shagging Rooney as captain, when neither of them have the organisational capabilities on the pitch that Terry does.

If you’d ever played the game (properly) you’d also know that the best position for a captain is central defence, as they can see all in front of them (with some notable mid-field exceptions, such as Bryan Robson and such luminaries).

If you like the ‘English soccer first division’ then you should be commenting on Swindon, Yeovil, Norwich and Millwall. Above the first division is the Championship, then the Premiership. Christ, you can’t even get the league right what hope is there for you?

Oh and taking on the mantle of the ‘grammar police’ is pedantic, and facetious.

Now, if you want to get political, you really should check your history, King George was a wily old soul and allowed you to think you’d ‘kicked our asses’ – your revolution was nothing more that a con to turn your nation from free men, into debtors to king George. Google who owns the US Fed, or the IRS – who collects your taxes. Clue, it’s not the US.

Some more info here; http://www.natural-person.ca/pdf/Great_Britain_owns_USA.PDF – however I shouldn’t be re-educating you about your history on a ’soccer’ site, you should find out for yourself and dispel the myths taught in school (as I have done with our country, and I know we’re certainly no saints, either).

      • j6pini says:

I didn’t say anything about the England captaincy, or Terry, if you were talking to me in that portion of your response. Concerning the First Division, that’s what the Premiership is, as FIFA recognizes it. The division that includes clubs such as Millwall is League One isn’t it, not the First Division?

  6. Brendan says:

JT is supposed to be a positive role model on and off the field if he is to lead his club and country as captain. I think it is ridiculous how someone who so many look to for guidance and leadership is pulling this kind of stuff off. Rio, Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney may not be perfect themselves either, but bottom line is that they haven’t gone behind their own teammates backs and pulled such actions that JT has pulled. If England are gonna go this distance this summer, they’re gonna need a captain/leader that everyone knows and trusts. I think JT’s actions just speak for themselves that this man is just not suited for such responsibility anymore.

And to Johnny English, we may be ‘yankie boys’ but it doesn’t mean we aren’t entitled to our opinions. I don’t care whether you think we ‘don’t know’ about football. It’s a sport that is loved around the world. If you want to be ignorant to other people’s opinions and comments over some of the sport’s most controversial subjects then I suggest you stop wasting your time on football blogs.

    • Johnny English says:

“ff. Rio, Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney may not be perfect themselves either, but bottom line is that they haven’t gone behind their own teammates backs and pulled such actions that JT has pulled.”

No, Rio ‘forgot’ drugs tests and has been banned for punching an opponent. Gerrard battered a DJ for not playing the songs he wanted as well as being a serial cheat and diver, Rooney sleeps with prostitutes behind his missus’ back and effs and blinds at referee’s week in, week out and Lampard has played away too.

They may not have ‘gone behind their team mates backs’ but they’ve done equal to or worse than JT, and you’re holding them up as some sort of pariah? Also, aren’t you forgetting Miss Vanessa in all of this? She’s as guilty as JT, so where’s her press and blogosphere assassination?

Now, Brendan is it? Brendan, I never said you weren’t entitled to your opinions, please don’t put words into my mouth or onto my posts, you can have them (and christ knows, Americans like to opine) and you’re welcome to them, however please don’t get all indignant about issues within our national game when there are a million and one worse issues in your own.

      Glass houses, and all that.

  7. Zain Alvi says:

I have to say that even though I’ve lost a lot of respect for JT over the years, this incident has nothing to do with football and should definitely not impact JT’s eligibility to lead the three lions in South Africa. He’s a leader on the field and while he has struggled to maintain the same character off the field, you have to consider that no other high profile Englishman has a perfectly clean cut character. Maybe Capello needs to give them all a lesson in staying focused as the big tournament approaches in the summer.

  8. JB says:

let’s get this in perspective, something the lazy workshy Manchester Utd and Liverpool biased press are zealously trying to avoid. Footballers are blokes with too much money, too much time and too few brain cells. John Terry doesn’t deserve defending for what he’s done but neither does he deserve this crucifiction. He’s typical of the ilk. All this talk of him losing the England captaincy is laughable. Which angel with a stainless character is fit to replace him? Ferdinand, Gerrard, Beckham? Any of this lot open their wardrobes and the sound of skeletons falling out will be no differant to John Terry’s. Anyway where’s all the muck that should be thrown at Mrs Bridge or are we all of a sudden feeling sorry for the equally IQ shy WAGs now???

  9. peter says:

Seriously, get over it. Its Wayne Bridge, who cares. The media are trying to blow England’s best chance of winning the world cup for a cheap dig. He can do what he likes. Nobody cared when Beckham was accused of the same thing.

  10. Johnny English says:

Oh and by the way, we’re ’supporters’ in England, not ‘fans’ – we always have been thus.

  11. Johnny English says:

Ha ha ha! And this from a country that gave us OJ Simpson.

You have no idea yankie boy, so stick to your girl sports (rugby with pads, rounders with pads and er, hockey… with pads) and leave the real FOOTBALL to those who know what their on about.

JT is a tit, but he’s our tit.

  12. Jack Russell says:

Sorry but all he has done is have sex, is that a crime?? and what has what his parents have done got to do with him….This article is an utter disgrace and a waste of cyberspace!

    • An expected and shameful response. I suppose anyone who thinks cheating on their wife isn’t wrong won’t particularly enjoy this article. But then again, most things would be lost on you.

You’re right, his parents’ actions don’t directly reflect on him, but his antics are adding up really quickly.

Cheating on his wife several times, mocking American tourists for terrorist attacks and lost lives. Sounds like a class guy to you, huh?

      • Jack Russell says:

Im sorry but “But then again, most things would be lost on you. ” how can you make this comment you don’t know anything about me.
Shameful response how is this shameful?

His antics adding up really quickly… 9/11 was 9 years ago.
I’m not defending his actions, I just hate sloppy journalism.
who would you rather have as England Captain then…Rio Ferdinand (a pleasant fellow!). Gerrard (another ‘nice’guy) Rooney (I seem to recall an incident with a prostitute) Lampard (more ex-marital sex)
Leave the guy to get on with his job and England to win the world cup!!
