Former Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp could be about to save his old club, and in the process land two new players for his high-flying Tottenham side. Redknapp is lining up the signings of both Pompey midfielder Younes Kaboul and goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.
While the signings wouldn’t completely alleviate Portsmouth’s financial troubles, the move would enable David James to stay at Fratton Park and also give the south coast club a much needed cash boost.
Portsmouth today emailed staff members informing them of the possibility of another missed payroll. This would be the fourth time this season that Portsmouth players and staff don’t get paid on time, and it’s only a matter of time before the FA and Premier League step in.
In addition to the financial troubles affecting payroll, the club underwent further embarrassment this morning as their club website went down. The “Website Unavailable” message is said to have been displayed due to Portsmouth not paying their website provider on time. The site has since been restored, but doubts surround the club.
Tottenham’s potential purchases of Kaboul and Begovic would give Portsmouth some much needed financial relief in the wake of tomorrow’s payroll.

Can’t exactly blame Spurs or Harry for the mess we’re in. The blame lies with whoever’s been overseeing the books for the past few years. We were a club living beyond our means for a good few seasons and only now are the consequences of doing so becoming apparent. Spurs may have had a few players from us but they can afford to not only buy them but also to keep them. Losing Kaboul and (especially) Begovic is a massive loss, but it’s necessary to keep the club afloat.
Hopefully we’ll get out of this mess, but I’m not holding my breath for it to happen any time soon.
Smirking, I’m resigned to us being relegated this season – here’s hoping it’s only one league and that Saints go up. I miss the regular local derbies.
What goes around comes around. It wasn’t that long ago the Arry was hailed as the demi god after helping Saints get relegated. The abuse that was posted on the Saints forum when we went into administration was shocking. Sympathy? I don’t think so. Nobody likes to see any club go bust but the big stinky shoe is on the other big stinky foot now. We shall see you as we pass on the way up … and you head to the Non league abyss. COYR. Pay up Pompey, Pompey pay up.
Stop deluding yourselves Pompey fans, your previous owner, Storrie (Mr 1.3m salary a year?!) and your board are entirely to blame here. Yes, ‘Arry bought the players cos he was told he could but didn’t determine the wages or transfer fees. 80k a week Utaka, please?! Spurs fans don’t expect thanks at all – most feel sorry for you over this financial blackhole you’re in, but stop whinging that Redknapp and our club are the reason for it and look closer to home… You sound like those miserable Spammers followers, buck your ideas up and send them down instead! We’ll send you some handy loan players to help that cause…
Harry Redknapp is not saving us AT ALL. He signed players for record fees, that wanted record wages and when he found out the money had run out, jumped ship to a richer club. THEN has the audacity to buy back most of the squad at bargain basement prices because he knows what a financial mess we’re in due to his deals. It’s like a murderer rushing back to the house to rob the jewelery and getting praised as being a saviour. It’s sickening
The idea that Harry Redknapp is in any way saving Pompey is frankly laughable. Unless he pays $10 million for Kaboul and drops his interest in Begovic, he is just continuing the demolition of the club that he began when he recklessly spent as manager here.
The FA should already be involved, how can they let a club get into this state when supposedly their owner is a billionaire,
It’s time for the FA to chase this man up and get it sorted.
