Top 10 World Cup teams of all time  | read this item

Now that we know the groups for this summer’s tournament in South Africa, the team over at World Cup Odds have compiled a list of the top ten World Cup teams of all time. Some of the teams were rewarded with World Cup triumphs while some are remembered only in legend, but all of these teams had one thing in common: brilliant players.

Hungary 1954

Hungary may not have won the World Cup in 1954, but there is no denying their brilliance. This is a team that scored an outstanding 27 goals en route to the final, and even beat South American powerhouses Brazil and Uruguay along the way. Unluckily for the Hungarians, they faced a difficult German team in the final and eventually lost 3-2.

Brazil 1970

This team speaks for itself. Brazil took the world by storm in 1970 led by the talents of arguably the world’s greatest player of all-time (that’s you, Pele). In addition to Pele, this Brazilian side had stars such as Alberto, Jairzinho, Tostato, and Rivelino. They went six for six in the 1970 tournament, beating everyone who stood in their way.

Holland 1974

The brilliant orange are often cited as the best team to never win a World Cup, and the 1974 edition of Holland’s eleven is right up there with the best. Led by the skillful and entertaining Johan Cruyff, Holland’s new system of total football was a joy to behold. Always attacking and always fluid, Holland deserved to win the tournament but stumbled at the final hurdle.

Argentina 1986

Never before has one player taken hold of a World Cup in the way that Diego Maradona did in 1986. Maradona’s sheer brilliance made Argentina a spectacle in ’86, and people far too often forget that he had a great supporting cast too. This team is the last team to not need extra time or penalties on the way to winning a World Cup, and their victory is remembered very fondly by most football fans.

Italy 1982

Paolo Rossi propelled Italy to a historic World Cup triumph in 1982 as he scored six goals in the tournament. Italy proved that to win the World Cup you need to beat the best teams in the world, and they never flinched as they took on Brazil, Argentina, and Germany.

  1. Totally agree with all of these, for me the three best out of this list are probably Italy, Brazil, and Holland.
