Following their embarrassing 9-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, Wigan Athletic players have stated their intention to personally refund any fan who made the trip to North London.
“We feel that as a group of players we badly let down our supporters yesterday (Sunday), and this is a gesture we have to make and pay them back for their tremendous loyalty,” captain Mario Melchiot told wiganlatics.co.uk.
“There’s not a lot else to say, just that as a group of professionals we were embarrassed by the way we performed. We feel it was below our standard and this is something we feel we owe to the fans.
“Now we have to draw a line under the game, focus completely on training this week and bounce back on Saturday. We are professionals, we will take it on the chin and move on, but it’s important that we do not take our supporters for granted.”
Manager Roberto Martinez confirmed his embarrassment over the result, saying: “It was unacceptable and unexpected. The way we defended in key moments was not good enough. I am embarrassed as it’s a result we don’t want to be associated with. We need to move on quickly and give a good reaction in the next game.”
Wigan fans who purchased their away tickets through the DW Stadium office can claim their refund by visiting the ticket office or calling 0871 33 66 552. Full refunds will be issued within 14 days of receipt and will be posted to fans’ home addresses.

A super result for Tottenham,
but what I’m really wondering about Wigan is, could they be going down? They’ve conceded something like 30 goals in 13 games, and with the way Burnley, Birmingham, and others are doing, it could be relegation zone soon for Wigan.
