As part of our continuing partnership with the guys over at Soccer Pro, from time to time they send us products to test out and review. This month we received a pair of Nike Mercurial Vapor V cleats to try out, and after three matches of playing in them I must admit that I have only good things to say about them.

Perhaps the best attribute of the Nike Vapors is that they are extremely lightweight. When wearing them it almost feels as if there is nothing in between the ball and your feet, meaning that they give much closer control. These are by far the lightest soccer shoes that I’ve ever worn.

Besides just being light, the Nike material on the Vapors, coupled with the tongue that hides all of the lacing, gives these cleats a very large and very clear striking spot. With some boots the laces get in the way or the shoe’s design leaves a small sweet spot, but the Vapors’ minimalistic design enables you to strike the ball with true venom and velocity virtually anywhere on the shoe. In the games I tested the shoes out with, I found my shots to be more accurate and powerful.

The stud design on the bottom is also the product of some great design work as well. One of the most common problems I have faced with cleats in the past is how the studs fall off over time, but these Vapors avoid the classic circular studs and instead feature a design that enables quick turning and good traction. I used these cleats both on grass and artificial turf, and on both surfaces I had a great deal of control.

Overall, I would recommend these boots to absolutely anyone. They are so lightweight and comfortable (no blisters!) that it takes no time to break them in, and because they’re so minimalist they just enable you to play your own game. No more worrying about external interferences, except maybe a few wayward shots from my teammates!
