Manchester United and France left-back Patrice Evra has told the press of his inability to drink his favorite drink, Sprite, after seeing nothing but green in it. France take on the Republic of Ireland this weekend in a crucial World Cup qualifyer, and Evra has quickly learned to despise all things green.
“I’ve had the impression for days that certain people have been wearing green on purpose. Maybe that’s just my imagination,” said Evra.
“But the other day I opened a can of Sprite, took a good look at it and decided I had to swap it for another drink.
“The moment I see anything green I think about the Republic of Ireland.”
“These last few days at United have been difficult. John O’Shea has promised me it will be hell at Croke Park. I have had the mickey taken out of me a lot.
“It’s normal, as when England failed to make Euro 2008 I asked my English team-mates if they wanted a remote control to switch between games on TV.
“Now it’s started once more. Darren Fletcher, who plays for Scotland, tells me we’ll spend the summer together.
“It would be a scandal if France don’t qualify for the finals. This play-off is bigger than the three Champions League finals I’ve played in.
“The joking has to stop now. We have to qualify. It has become an obsession.”
