Newcastle United regained the top spot in the Coca Cola League Championship after edging Sheffield United 1-0 away from home. The Magpies went into Monday evening a point behind West Bromwich Albion but an own goal from Blades skipper Chris Morgan stunned Bramall Lane.

Fortunately for Newcastle, there was no coming back from the hosts. Goalkeeper Steve Harper’s heroics, particularly in the final moments of the match, guaranteed that Ryan Taylor’s deflected effort remained the difference between the two sides. Embattled Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell would also have a strong case if he decides to attribute the narrow defeat to the performance of referee Kevin Friend, who could have penalized Newcastle midfielder Kevin Nolan’s tough-tackling ways.

His opposite number, Chris Hughton, could not have been happier with the result as Monday night’s match gave him the ideal start since being installed permanently as the manager at St. James’ Park. Speaking of St. James’ Park, it will play host to relegation-threatened Peterborough United on Saturday afternoon.

Will the Toon Army prevail at the expense of its struggling visitors? Or is the occasion going to mark the fourth league defeat of the season for promotion-chasing Newcastle United? Find out for yourself when the two square off on November 7.

It’s good to see that Newcastle is doing well in the fizzy pop league. I’d love to see them back in the Prem next season…at Hull’s expense.
