As a Manchester United fan Saturday’s 2-0 win over Blackburn represented much more than just three points. Not only did Dimitar Berbatov score yet another sensational goal, but young French winger Gabriel Obertan made his Premier League debut. Obertan impressed midweek in the Carling Cup against Barnsley, but seeing him against Premiership opposition just meant that much more.

Sir Alex Ferguson opted to bring Obertan on for a disappointing Nani, and the Frenchman’s introduction brought excitement and anticipation to the hearts of all United fans. Sure, Obertan didn’t do anything absolutely outstanding or breath taking, but the signs are all there.

Think back to Cristiano Ronaldo’s debut for the Red Devils. I’m not trying to compare Obertan with Ronaldo, as the two are completely different types of players, but glimmers of promise showed in both of these young star’s Premier League debuts. Ronaldo came on against a lackluster Bolton Wanderers and tormented them down the flank before earning a penalty. Obertan, meanwhile, made his bow against a struggling Blackburn Rovers side, and his pace and finesse presented him with two golden opportunities in front of the Blackburn net, one of which showed his raw pace and intelligence.

So Obertan didn’t exactly finish off either of those chances (and he definitely should have!), but his Premier League jitters will surely go away over time. Obertan showed that he has raw speed, good size, and tricky feet – all characteristics that are needed to succeed as a Manchester United winger.

Obertan’s introduction to the Manchester United first team is providing United fans with something to be excited about. The defending Premier League champions haven’t exactly been setting the world alight this season, but with Obertan now pushing for a spot in the match day list of eighteen he is sure to put the pressure on some of the bigger names.

Keep in mind, Obertan is only 20 years of age. He has his whole career ahead of him, and what better place to be than at Manchester United?

  1. Obertan looks to be promising, but I think it will be a year or two before he comes close to reaching Ronaldo’s levels.

  2. Andy says:

Wow, jumping the gun here aren’t we. I think similar things were said of Nani, no? And look at him now, i’m not even sure how he gets near the United team.

  3. scum says:

He was awful in the prem game. In cup he at least managed to do somethings right…

  4. Brian Kidd says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHA

  5. david falzon says:

yeah this is all so true!! before he came on as sub he said it himself that he was a bit nervous but then who wouldnt be nervous when making your debut for 1 of the biggest clubs in the world infront of nearly 80,000 people!! he looks so promising– all i can hope is that it will all continue for him cause he really does look like a great and cheap buy for man utd!

  6. Brian Solli says:

To a neutral it looked very similar to an earlier French version, lots of pace and no finishing ability. Step forward David Bellion.

Anderson on the other hand ran the midfield with ease and are starting to look the real thing.
