A demoralized Manchester United team takes on a flu-struck  Blackburn side at Old Trafford on Saturday. Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping his side can recover from their disappointing 2-0 loss at the hands of rivals Liverpool last weekend. A convincing win over Barnsley midweek in the Carling Cup provided some encouragement for United’s youngsters, but it should be back to business for the bulk of the United first team.

  • There are no new injuries to report on for Manchester United, as only the trio of Darren Fletcher, Ji-Sung Park, and Owen Hargreaves are expected to miss out.
  • Sir Alex Ferguson was pleased with Michael Owen’s performance in the Carling Cup against Barnsley, and it’s only a matter of time before the English international gets a bigger chance at Old Trafford.
  • United play host to CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday night before their big clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next Sunday.

United Form

  • United lost their last Premier League fixture to bitter rivals Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield.
  • After making eleven changes to the side that started at Anfield, United picked up a convincing 2-0 win over Barnsley in the Carling Cup. Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen were the goalscorers.
  • United currently sit in second place in the Premiership, and a win could see them leapfrog over Chelsea into first.

Key Man: Rio Ferdinand. United’s poor form lately has much to do with the poor form of Rio Ferdinand, and if the Red Devils want to turn things around then it will have to start with the defense. Rio Ferdinand has a lot to figure out, and his leadership and talent is much needed in the United back four. Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans is waiting in the wings.

Blackburn Rovers

  • Blackburn have controversially found themselves in a spot of bother after several players at the club have contracted the infamous swine flu virus. David Dunne is the key figure that missed the club’s match against Chelsea because of the flu.
  • In addition to just the players, manager Big Sam Allardyce has also been feeling under the weather lately. Allardyce watched the team’s last match from the stands to avoid the players, and the flu has left Blackburn depleted.
  • Christopher Samba will definitely miss the match against the defending champions as the defender has lost an unbelievable 10 lbs after contracting the flu virus.

Blackburn Form

  • The Rovers fell to a heavy 5-0 loss against Chelsea last weekend in a match that was marred by the flu controversy.
  • Their midweek fixture against Peterborough in the Carling Cup provided them with a much needed boost as they won 5-2.
  • Blackburn currently sits 16th in the table, but a win could propel them as high as 10th.

Key Man: Paul Robinson. England’s former number one has fallen off the radar since his low key move to Ewood Park, but he is slowly regaining focus and shrugging off his previous high stakes mistakes. Robinson has the ability to shine against United, and with Fabio Capello taking note, Robinson has his chance.

Prediction: On the back of their very poor performance against Liverpool, Sir Alex Ferguson will be demanding the best from his stars. Blackburn, meanwhile, find themselves wrapped up in off the pitch worries, and coupled with their bad form it doesn’t look good for the Rovers at Old Trafford. I can see a 4-0 win to Manchester United.
